Companywide efforts to benefit local food banks across country
MINNEAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 11, 2008--In honor of National
Hunger Action Month, SUPERVALU INC. (NYSE: SVU) and its nationwide
family of stores, including Acme, Albertsons, bigg's, Cub Foods, Farm
Fresh, Hornbacher's, Jewel-Osco, Lucky, Shaw's, Shop 'n Save and
Shopper's Food & Pharmacy, are conducting a coordinated program of
hunger relief efforts in communities across the country. The
activities, which include store-based fundraising, employee volunteer
initiatives, and food donations, are being done in partnership with
Feeding America (formerly known as America's Second Harvest) and all
proceeds will be donated to food banks located in the communities
served by SUPERVALU stores.
"SUPERVALU and our associates are proud to join Feeding America in
the effort to raise awareness of hunger in our country and to do our
part to help provide assistance to those in need," said Jeff Noddle,
SUPERVALU chairman and CEO. "National Hunger Action Month provides a
great opportunity for us to expand our continuing hunger relief
activities and to really make a difference in the fight against hunger
in our communities."
Hunger relief is one of SUPERVALU's designated areas of focus for
its charitable giving and volunteer activities, along with health and
nutrition and environmental stewardship. In 2007, SUPERVALU's stores
collectively distributed more than 27 million pounds of food to food
banks across the nation. This year, the need for hunger relief
assistance is particularly strong. According to a May, 2008 survey of
180 food banks conducted by Feeding America, 99 percent of the food
banks reported between a 15 percent and 20 percent increase in the
number of people being served compared to one year ago, and 81 percent
reported that they are unable to meet the growing demand without
having to dramatically reduce the amount of food given to each
